Background and Objectives: Surgery and anesthesia cause a great deal of stress in patients and, on the other hand, lead to physiological disorders that may manifest as complications such as agitation and increased recovery time after anesthesia and during recovery. Given the importance of identifying and implementing interventions to reduce agitation and recovery time in patients after surgery, the present study was conducted with the aim of determining the effect of Nurse Voice-Based Auditory Orientation on Agitation and Recovery Time after General Anesthesia in Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy.
Materials and Methods: This randomized clinical trial was conducted on patients who were clinically diagnosed with cholecystitis, and underwent Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy. Data was collected using the RASS Agitation Assessment Scale questionnaire and a checklist for post-operative recovery time. Patients underwent anesthesia with a standardized protocol. In the group intervention patients (n=27), headphones were provided to patients in the operating room, post-operative awareness with auditory sensory stimulation was conducted using the pre-recorded voice of the patient's nurse from the surgical ward. In the group control patients (n=27), only routine operating room care was performed.
Results: The results of the Generalized Estimating Equations test demonstrated that the control and intervention groups exhibited a statistically significant difference in agitation scores (p< 0.05). Patients in the intervention group exhibited lower agitation scores. The study also demonstrated a statistically significant difference in recovery time between the two groups (P<0.01).
Conclusion: The results indicated that auditory stimulation administered by nurses in the operating room reduced the recovery time and agitation of patients after Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy.
