Background and Objective: Cardiovascular complications linked to diabetes are among the most severe manifestations of the disease. This study evaluated how an 8-week regimen of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) combined with L-cysteine supplementation influences TLR4 protein expression and TNF-α levels in the cardiac tissue of rats with type 2 diabetes.
Methods: In this experimental study, random sampling divided nine male Wistar rats into five control and experimental groups. After inducing diabetes in experimental and diabetic control groups, the exercise group performed high-intensity interval training for eight weeks. One-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni post hoc test were used to determine the difference between groups.
Results: Type 2 diabetes in rats is associated with a significant increase in the TLR4 and TNF-α levels in heart tissue (p=0.001). Performing HIIT can reduce the TLR4 index to the pre-diabetic condition (p=0.001). Also, performing HIIT with an L-cysteine supplement is associated with a significant decrease in TLR4 and TNF-α levels (p=0.001).
Conclusion: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) in type 2 diabetic rats triggers a significant suppression of the TLR4 signaling pathway in cardiac tissue, possibly contributing to reduced inflammation and improved insulin resistance.
