Background & Aims: The quality of life of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy is negatively affected by several factors. One of them is nausea and vomiting. Aromatherapy with peppermint essential oil a complementary approach to mitigating this complication. The present study aimed to examine the effect of peppermint compounds on reducing these symptoms.
Methods: This study employed a systematic review and meta-analysis approach in accordance with PRISMA 2015. The database search process (Cochrane Medline Web of Science Scopus) was conducted from the beginning to August 1, 2024. In this study, only randomized controlled clinical trials that had investigated the impacts of mint compounds on cancer patients were used. The quality of the screened studies was then assessed. Data were extracted, with analysis performed to obtain the cumulative effect using Stata version V-17.
Results: The pooled findings revealed that peppermint significantly reduced the symptoms of nausea and vomiting in patients following chemotherapy (SMD: 0.643, 95% CI: (0.458-0.829). This is because the standardized mean difference with 95% confidence is in an interval that does not include zero and is positive. According to the findings of the Egger test and funnel plot, no publication bias was found (p = 0.125). However, in this study, a high level of heterogeneity (P = 0.020, I² = 60.1%) was obtained, and as such the random effects model (REM) was employed for data analysis. This heterogeneity could be due to differences in the type of interventions and assessment tools. These results highlight the effectiveness of peppermint essential oil in mitigating the symptoms of nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy.
Conclusion: Aromatherapy with peppermint essential oil may serve as an effective and cost-efficient treatment for alleviating nausea and vomiting symptoms arising from chemotherapy. Indeed, it can offer a promising foundation for future research and clinical applications.
