Aim:
This study evaluates the impact of pain neuroscience education (PNE) on pain intensity, catastrophization, disability, and kinesiophobia in individuals with chronic nonspecific low back pain (LBP). It also compares the effects of PNE combined with therapeutic exercises against conventional exercise alone.
Introduction:
Chronic LBP is increasingly prevalent among young adults, often due to sedentary lifestyles and poor ergonomic practices. While acute LBP can be treated effectively, chronic cases present challenges. This study investigates how PNE, combined with therapeutic exercises, influences pain perception and quality of life for those with chronic LBP.
Study Design and Methodology:
This randomized controlled trial involved 60 participants diagnosed with chronic nonspecific LBP, divided into two groups: an experimental group (n=30) receiving four weeks of exercise and two PNE sessions, and a control group (n=30) following the same exercise routine without PNE. Key outcomes—pain intensity, catastrophization, disability, and kinesiophobia—were assessed before and after the intervention.
Results:
Both groups showed significant improvements in pain, catastrophization, disability, and kinesiophobia. However, the experimental group demonstrated greater reductions in pain intensity (p = 0.0173), catastrophization (p = 0.0187), and disability (p = 0.0394) compared to the control group.
Conclusion:
The findings suggest that while both therapeutic exercises and PNE benefit chronic LBP management, their combination leads to more significant improvements in pain-related outcomes. Incorporating PNE into exercise programs enhances reductions in pain perception, catastrophization, and disability, offering a more comprehensive approach to managing chronic LBP.
