Background: ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is a major cardiovascular emergency. Left ventricular ejection fraction (EF) is a critical predictor of prognosis post-STEMI. Diabetes mellitus (DM), especially newly diagnosed, may influence cardiac function.
Methods: This cross-sectional study included 283 patients admitted with STEMI. Demographic, clinical, laboratory data, angiographic data, and EF were collected. DM was screened with HbA1C, and EF was evaluated by transthoracic 2D echocardiography. Statistical analyses were performed by SPSS 26.
Results: Among 1562 patients following refer with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), 283 patients with STEMI and without exclusion criteria were entered to present study. Mean age was 63.1 ± 10.5years.  The patients with reduced EF were significantly older (61.4 ± 9.8 years vs 67.2 ± 10.8 years; P-value<0.001). A statistically significant association was found between new diagnosed DM and reduced EF (P-value=0.037). Smoking was also significantly associated with reduced EF (P-value=0.023). No significant association was found between EF and body mass index (BMI), sex, hypertension (HTN), dyslipidemia (DLP), coronary artery disease (CAD) severity, culprit lesion, and MI territory, .
Conclusion: New DM, older age, and smoking are significantly associated with reduced EF in patients with STEMI.
