Urgent administration of analgesia is needed in cases of severe and intolerable renal colic. Varied agents have been used for the treatment of this entity.
In this paper, the different effects of three agents, hyoscine, indomethacin, and aminophylline have been compared.
Hyoscine, probably because of its parasmpatholytic properties, indomethacin, for its antiprostaglandin effects and aminophylline by inhibition of phosphodiesterase enzyme; relax ureter and pelvic musculature and or reduce upper urinary tract pressure; therefore pain is ceased.
Pethidine, influencing on CNS, caused the renal colic improvement. According to this research, in renal colic treatment, pethidine generally effective in %97, is still the drug of choice.
Aminophylline, indomethacin, and hyoscine relieve pain %66, %35, and %37 of the patients respectively.
Thus aminophylline can be used instead of pethidine for renal colic treatment and so is indomethacin, but with less effect. Hyoscine because of its little effect on renal colic is not recommended.
